Reviews & Aerial Photos Of Resorts

On some photos you'll notice that the ocean isn't always blue. That's usually because the coral reef from below is showing and light can play funny tricks when you're taking aerial photos. We're telling you this so you don't misinterpret it to mean the water is nasty there.

The Solid Gold indicates that the property is exceptionally well priced for what you get. The Real Gem means that this hotel or condominium offers something particularly special, not necessarily related to the price.

All prices given are rack rates, meaning without any discounts. Tour packages, websites and travel agents can often get better rates. Most resorts offer discounts for stays of a week or more, and some will negotiate price with you. Some won't budge at all on rack rates, but most told us no one pays rack rates. With this edition (and the economic downturn), we found that hotels were ready to make a deal. It's a buyer's market. So always ask, look for discounts or package deals. Prices listed are subject to taxes of around 13.5%.

Unless otherwise noted, all resorts have room safes (for extra--usually $2-$5 per day), air conditioning, empty refrigerators, coin-op laundry facilities, daily maid service, lanais, coffee makers in the rooms, self-parking for $5-$30 per day, and local calls from $.75 to $2 a pop. Most resorts have wheelchair-accessible rooms. A law in Hawai'i has required many resorts to adopt a non-smoking policy, but some resorts may allow smoking in your room, on your lanai or on specific floors. If you are bothered by smoking or you can't live without it, best check and see if your choice of place to stay will accommodate you. Internet access, if not free, runs around $10-$20 per day. Wi-Fi signal quality in Waikiki varies widely (even at different times of the day or night), so if you need fast, reliable service, opt for a place that offers wired hi-speed Internet. Generally speaking, if a resort is not on the beach, get as high up as possible for the best views and less street noise when staying in Waikiki.
