Other Places in Hana

Other than Hotel Hana Maui and Hana Kai Maui Resort, you do have some other choices:

Hana Maui Travel Co. (800) 548-0478 or (808) 248-7742
is probably the biggest rental agency in Hana. They represent 10-15 private houses for rent. The homes we've seen could be cleaner, but some are okay deals. Although we've stayed at many of the houses, it's not practical for us to stay at them all. For what it's worth, our reader e-mails about them leans heavily toward the negative. Take me there...

Aloha Cottages (808) 248-8420 8420 at 83 Keawa Place is five cheap and very dreary units with a kitchen or kitchenette. Don't expect much here--no phone, no Internet and not much aloha. Some rooms have a tv. If you want to look at the rooms, you'll be asked to "look through the windows." We suggest you keep on looking--elsewhere. $70-$100.

Bamboo Inn (808) 248-7718 on Uakea Road has 3 rooms with tvs and phones for $175-$240. They're fine and clean. Rates include continental breakfast. They all have Jacuzzi tubs--some on the decks. Take me there...

Hana Bay Hale (800) 471-8082 or (808) 248-4999 at 4950 Uakea Road is a triplex with kitchenettes, tvs and bbqs. Across the street from the ocean with decent views through power lines. 1/1 is $175, 2/2 (full kitchen) is $275. You can do better. 1-night stays pay a cleaning fee. Take me there...

Hana Hale Inn (808) 248-7641 on Uakea Road is 4 varied units with kitchens, Jacuzzi tubs, tvs and phones. Free hi-speed Internet is available in the lobby. The Royal Suite (1,800 sq. ft.) is the smashing upstairs unit of a duplex. Gobs of beautiful wood. Only ding is the hardwood carries sound well to other rooms. $260 for 2 bedroom. They also have a bungalow for $185, a small one bedroom suite for $160 and a treehouse cottage (not actually a treehouse, but nicely incorporated into the landscape) for $200. All these units overlook a serene fishpond. Rates include continental breakfast. The units could be cleaner, and expect to share your units with some of nature's creatures. Take me there...

Hana Maui Vacation Rental (800) 991-2422 or (808) 248-8087 at 4176 Hana Hwy. 3 clean, simple, very basic units with kitchen or kitchenette, tv but no phone. Grounds are homey. Good deal at $85-$95. No credit cards. Take me there...

Hana Oceanfront Cottages (808) 248-7558 on Haneoo Road. 2 units  with bbq, kitchens, tv, Wi-Fi and phone. Lovely grounds and very nicely furnished units, if a tad pricey. But they do give you just about all you may need from coffee to sunscreen. A suite is $250 (1,000 sq. ft.) and a cottage $275 (600 sq. ft.), both across street from Hamoa Beach. No kids. Owners live on property. 3- or 4-night minimum.

Heavenly Hana Inn (808) 248-8442 at 4155 Hana Hwy. has 3 units, more like a B&B, all connect to common area. Exotically decorated, beautiful wood floors, very nice bathrooms, open serene grounds. Pretty pricey, and they charge $16 for breakfast. Two-night minimum, no kids allowed. Suites are $190-$260. Take me there...

Joe's Place (808) 248-7033 at 4870 Uakea Road. It's $50 for a shared bath and kitchen, $60 for a private room. Fairly tidy. You get what you pay for here. Take me there...

Na Pualani o Hana (808) 248-8935 on Kalo Road. 5 units with kitchens or a kitchenette, bbq, tvs. The setting is nice, surrounded by lush grounds, but the rooms are pretty unkempt. Good deal if you have a group since many can stay. Studios $80, 2/2s $130.

Lastly, you might find individuals renting their homes using the internet, though it's more of a crap-shoot.
