"Just wanted to say THANK YOU for your great book, Maui Revealed. I had other books which I thought were great until a friend at work lent me her Maui Revealed book for my trip to Maui. You book is BY FAR THE BEST! Thanks so much. I just purchased your books for Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island for future trips. We had the best vacation in Maui the past 10 days thanks to finding all the recommended spots in your book (or at least as many as we could fit into our vacation). A very happy reader."

Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay

Gem

(800) 819-5053 or (808) 565-2000
One Manele Bay Rd., Lana'i

Aerial View

236 rooms, pool, 2 spas, 4 tennis courts, free fitness room, valet parking, 24-hour room service, 3 restaurants, shops, day spa, hi-speed Internet access in rooms, Wi-Fi in some common areas, children’s program, 9 conference rooms, free 24-hour business center, coffee maker with free coffee daily, valet-only laundry. This resort is actually on harder-to-pronounce Hulopo‘e Bay, has a more Hawaiian feel than sister property “the Lodge” does. At check-in, your credit card is momentarily whisked away to be run through their special nasa-designed hydraulic credit card press, capable of pumping more money out of your credit card than you ever imagined. The resort is very pretty and tropical and the restaurants are good, though pricey. (Men need to wear a collared shirt at one of the restaurants.) The $50 million renovations completed in 2005 have created an atmosphere of relaxed elegance. This resort doesn’t feel stuffy or pretentious. The Asian art exhibited is from the owner’s private collection, and some of the art is outstanding.

Though not directly on a beach, it is a short walk from their property on their beach path. The pool and its 2 spas are open 24 hours, and during the day you can enjoy an Evian spritz, chilled towels and even get your sunglasses cleaned.

Many amenities at this property are included, such as free room safes, free valet parking, free fitness classes, free snorkel gear, and personalized mini bar selections. Local calls are a buck, and there is an extra charge for the Internet.

It is clear that families are welcome here. They have a free kids’ program during the day and a teen center with video games, pool table and large flat screen tv. They will child-proof your room and leave out a welcome snack of milk and cookies on arrival. Cribs are free. Adults will be happy here, too, with romantic dinners for two (or up to 6 people) in the ocean hale on the lawn where they also do couple’s spa treatments.

There is a shuttle ($51 per person per stay) that will bring you back and forth around town or to the Lodge to enjoy what they have to offer up there. Rooms (576–814 sq. ft.) are $395–$995, suites (900–2,700 sq., ft.) are $1,050–$6,500.
