"I have read my share of Maui books but this one was the most helpful! We almost wore out the condo copy. We purchased a new one in Ma'alaea to take with us so that each of our group had one. As we were purchasing the second copy, a gal leaned over and whispered that Maui Revealed  was the best Maui book on the shelf today. You must be commended on such a detailed, fun to read, book. I always thought books should be written exactly like you have somehow managed to do, but always figured that no one, and I mean no one, would ever take the time to research and put all the details onto paper. I look forward to reading about the other islands. Thank you so much."

Makena Beach & Golf Resort

310 rooms, pool and keiki pool, 2 spas, fitness center, hi-speed Internet access in rooms, Wi-Fi in the lobby, 11 conference rooms, valet parking, free mini golf, day spa, dvds upon request, 4 restaurants, laundry facilities, empty refrigerators, 6 tennis courts (2 lighted), room service, wedding coordinator. This is probably the most subdued resort in South Maui. It’s not actually in Wailea, but rather out on its own, farther south in Makena. In fact it’s the last resort—literally—in South Maui and rarely has a crowded feel, even when it’s full. That’s partially because you’re less likely to spend as much time at the resort than at some others in Wailea. The pool area is decidedly low key. You won’t find waterslides and rope swings, but you won’t find it too crowded either. Their beach, Maluaka beach, is a winner and shared with no other resort. There is a boat, the Kai Kanani, that leaves directly from the resort beach and heads to Molokini; very convenient. The snorkeling off the left side of the beach is excellent, and many boats bring paying passengers here. (It’s one of their so-called Turtle Towns.)

Whereas in the past things were free, such as valet parking, fitness center, daily coffee in the rooms, room safe, pool-side cabana chairs, etc., new owners have instituted a resort fee of $15—which includes local calls, self-parking, fitness center and area shuttle. Cabana chairs are $40 per day by the pool, and umbrellas for the beach are also $40 per day. Golfers get preferred rates and tee times at their golf courses. They rent a lot of gear on site (stand-up paddle boards, boogie boards, etc.) at resort prices.

Rooms are relatively simple and smallish at 433–515 sq. ft. (The tapered building means that the higher you go, the smaller the rooms.) Bathrooms are small and look dated.

They have a free shuttle that takes you to Wailea, so you can participate in the restaurant selection there and walk the beachside path without feel-ing totally cut off. The resort is relaxing and fairly quiet. Nice place to arrange a relaxing massage by the ocean.

The staff is very warm here. The resort had just been auctioned off at press time, so some changes will probably be in the works. Rates are $425–$600. Suites (941–1,694 sq. ft.) are $379–$1,750. They have lots of packages, so it’s unlikely you’ll pay that.
