Maui Revealed: "Bought all four books yesterday in snowy New Hampshire. The text and illustrations are to die for. Can't wait to visit all four islands in March after staying up most of the night reading them. Thanks again." |
Ka'anapali Beach Hotel (800) 262-8450 or (808) 661-0011 2525 Ka'anapali Pkwy. ![]() 432 rooms, pool, 3 shops, free Wi-Fi in public areas, hi-speed Internet access in rooms, coffee makers with free coffee daily, Ping-Pong, Kupanaha magic show. This is one of the early Ka‘anapali resorts (1964), and it shows. It shows in the look of the buildings and some of the rooms, but it also shows in the warm hearts of the employees. This isn’t the place to go for the jaw-dropping opulence of some of the other Ka‘anapali resorts. You go here for its old-fashioned feel, the awesome beach location, aloha of the employees and the price. Half the rooms are in need of updating, and the other half were updated at press time with fair results. (Only wish they had done the bathrooms, too.) We saw a few sagging mattresses. If you don’t like your room, ask for another. The staff here has a very family feel. Even the photos of Hawaiians adorning some of the rooms are all employees of the hotel or their family members. The staff feels more Hawaiian and seems more interested in presenting Hawaiian culture, offering free classes in lei making, ‘ukulele lessons and other Hawaiian customs. They have free nightly hula shows and give departing guests a kukui nut lei accompanied by singing staff. You can even check in over the Internet and just present the form when you arrive. The Moloka‘i wing is non-smoking only and there’s no elevator. (They saved the elevator for the smoking rooms, assuming the smokers would be out of breath.) There is a $9 per day parking fee (valet is $11). Local calls are 75¢, and it’s $1.56 for the room safe. Their Ka‘anapali Mixed Plate restaurant offers all buffets that are cheaper than others in Ka‘anapali (kids under 5 are free). Rooms (425 sq. ft.) are $199$327, suites (575675 sq. ft.) are $277$457. Connecting rooms are $30 extra. They have some great Internet deals, like room and buffet breakfast for two for $20/night more that clinch the Solid Gold Value. |
