Aerial View

521 rooms, pool, 2 spas, 2 lighted tennis courts, 24-hour fitness room, room service, valet parking, 3 restaurants, lounge, empty fridge, 2 shops, 8 conference rooms, 24-hour business center, Wi-Fi throughout resort, coin-op laundry room, coffee makers in room with free coffee daily, free room safes, wedding coordinator, wedding chapel, seasonal children’s program, day spa, lu‘au. This resort was closed for three years before $80 million worth of renovations ushered in the current Sheraton back in 2005. It’s best described as sophisticated, understated, islandy and a bit stark, but it embraces their oceanside location. (But no sand beach, and they could use more plants in the interior areas.) They cater to families here, and it’s reflected in their multi-level water feature with 200-foot waterslide, waterfall and pool that meanders into the lobby atrium. The fitness room (for those who can’t bear to be on vacation without working out) is state of the art with a killer view of the ocean. The keiki center might just be the best we’ve seen in the state, complete with foosball, PlayStation, basketball, ping-pong, wide-screen movie theater, craft room and more. It’s $60 for a full day, which includes lunch, but is only available at peak times of the year. For older kids (and adults), they have a gaming area with pool tables and ping-pong. Casabella chairs for two by the pool are free. They have a good wedding infrastructure, including an oceanfront chapel. Couples can get a private ocean view massage and Jacuzzi in the day spa.

There is now a mandatory resort fee of $20 that covers self-parking (valet is $6 extra), Internet, local calls, a trolley that will run guests all the way into Kona Town and some other items. Overall, a modern, comfortable, family-friendly getaway. Hence, the gem. Room updates on-going at press time, including carpets, bedding and painting. Rooms (450 sq. ft.) are $199–$279, suites (925–3,000 sq. ft.) are $950–$2,550. Their partial ocean view category is worth the upgrade from mountain view. The hotel was for sale at press time.
