The best selling guide to the Big Island... Hawaii "Very good book. I lived on Oahu for close to 5 years and visited the Big Island probably half a dozen times. Going back again soon. This is the kind of information that one buys guidebooks for. Otherwise, I could just get a map and visit the tourist information booth...The pseudo history picked up by other guidebooks is really kind of annoying. Too bad you can't do other locations. I had to get about 6 books for a recent trip to London just to figure out what I wanted to do." |
Naniloa Volcanoes Resort (808) 969-3333 93 Banyan Dr. ![]() 266 rooms, pool, coin-op laundry, empty fridge, lanais and microwaves in oceanfront and deluxe oceanfront rooms only (or requested for $10/day), 3 conference rooms, 24-hour business center, free hi-speed Internet access in Mauna Kea building, free Wi-Fi in lobby and Mauna Loa building, 9-hole golf course. Let’s get one thing out of the way first. This resort is in Hilo and not near the volcano. It was still under renovations at press time. The two buildings have two personalities. Mauna Loa is priced less and, even though they made changes to the bedding and floors, they didn’t change out all the furniture or update the bathrooms, so it looks a bit odd. But you may be able to catch an oceanview. The Mauna Kea building rooms were all updated. The look is clean and modern, but pretty stark, and sounds echo easily around the room. Avoid adjoining rooms if you don’t plan on using the door because you can easily hear your neighbor. And avoid the 5th floorthe flooring is different and not as nice as other floors. Some things they got right, like hand-held shower heads. Other things they got wrong, like the tv mounted up by the ceiling and no desk lamp, side chair or table. At press time, they planned a restaurant and health spa and fitness room, but none was open on our visit. They were currently only offering breakfast in lobby. The common areas are clearly not renovated yet and badly need it. The wing that used to house the restaurant and some rooms is going to remain closed for now, we were told. The oceanfront deluxe rooms are very nice and nearly directly over the water. No other resort in Hilo gets you this close to the ocean. The suites are also nice on the corners of the Mauna Kea building with wrap-around lanais and full size refrigerators and kitchenettes. The potential to be the stand-out on Banyan Drive is there, just not there yet. We’ll go back again when they finish renovations. Rooms (425 sq. ft.) are $99$135. Suites (800 sq. ft.) are $295. These prices are meaningless, as you will always get a good discount. |
